For its latest World Mycotoxin Survey, Biomin conducted more than 33,000 analyses on 8,452 finished feed and raw commodity samples from 63 countries from January to June 2017. These analyses covered common components used for feed such as corn, wheat, barley, rice, soybean meal, corn gluten meal, dried distillers grains (DDGS) and silage, among others.
Results of the analyses found that deoxynivalenol (DON) and fumonisins (FUM) are the most common mycotoxins found in feedstuffs.
The survey details the incidence of the main mycotoxins occurring in agricultural commodities, which include aflatoxins (Afla), zearalenone (ZEN), deoxynivalenol, T-2 toxin (T-2), fumonisins and ochratoxin A (OTA).
Overall, deoxynivalenol and fumonisins were detected in 81 percent and 71 percent of all samples at average levels of 798 parts per billion (ppb) and 1,840 ppb, respectively. Out of all samples, 52 percent were contaminated by zearalenone. Aflatoxins, T-2 and OTA were present in 26 percent, 19 percent and 18 percent of samples, respectively.
Ninety-four percent of all samples contained at least one mycotoxin, and 76 percent of all samples contained two or more mycotoxins.
With five mycotoxins above the risk threshold, Europe faces a severe mycotoxin contamination risk. The most prevalent mycotoxin in this region was deoxynivalenol, detected in 77 percent of the samples, followed by zearalenone, detected in 58 percent of the samples. One finished feed sample from Spain had a maximum concentration of deoxynivalenol of 28,470 ppb and the highest maximum fumonisins concentration was detected in Russian sample (9,478 ppb).
In Asia, the average concentration of five mycotoxins was above the risk threshold, indicating that the region faces a severe contamination risk. The most prevalent mycotoxin was fumonisins, detected in 81 percent of samples, followed by deoxynivalenol, detected in 79 percent of samples analyzed. Biomin says, although the incidence of aflatoxins was rather low (34 percent of samples analyzed contaminated with this mycotoxin), the average concentration is worrisome and represents a threat to animals.
North America faces a severe risk of mycotoxin contamination with five mycotoxins above the risk threshold. Deoxynivalenol and fumonisins were the most prevalent mycotoxins in feed samples, detected in 80 percent and 65 percent of samples respectively. Maximum concentrations of deoxynivalenol and fumonisins were very high in this region (11,274 and 28,605 ppb respectively).
South America faces a severe contamination risk, with five mycotoxins registering average concentrations above the risk threshold. Deoxynivalenol is the most prevalent mycotoxin, and was found in 86 percent of samples, followed by fumonisins and zearalenone, identified in 77 percent and 50 percent of samples respectively. Aflatoxins, T-2 and OTA were detected in 29 percent, 23 percent and 5 percent of samples respectively. South America showed the third highest average concentration of fumonisins worldwide (2,192 ppb) and the highest average concentration of OTA worldwide (22 ppb). The highest fumonisins concentration reported in South America came from a Brazilian corn sample (34,860 ppb).

With four mycotoxins with average concentrations above the risk threshold, the Middle East faces a high contamination risk. The most prevalent mycotoxins in this region were deoxynivalenol, fumonisins and zearalenone detected in 62 percent, 58 percent and 43 percent of samples respectively. The highest maximum concentration detected in Middle East were 8,841 ppb fumonisins and 4,801 deoxynivalenol.
With four mycotoxins above the risk threshold, South Africa faces a high contamination risk. Deoxynivalenol, fumonisins and zearalenone were the most prevalent mycotoxins detected in 67 percent, 65 percent and 45 percent of samples respectively. South Africa shows the highest average concentration of zearalenone worldwide (9,805 ppb).
